The New Jersey Saltwater Fisherman's 1st annual "Fluke-a-thon" tournament went off as scheduled this past Saturday, July 12th. Thirteen member teams, from Atlantic Highlands to Little Egg Harbor, were out on the water to take part in a little friendly competition.

The real story of the tournament was the wind. Some had too much of it and some had none at all. It seemed that those fishing in the northern section of the state enjoyed some decent drifting conditions in the morning. However, later in the day a southerly wind started blowing so hard it made conditions virtually unfishable! It also made for a few bumpy rides back to the docks. Anglers down south faced the opposite problem. No wind and no drift at all. And when it comes to fluke fishing, whether its too fast, too slow or just right, the drift counts for a lot.No drift

Mansquan Fluke FishingHad CoolHand, NJBob, Pete and Big Don for our open boat fluke trip.

Weather forecast was crappy but, we decided to go since the guys wanted to fish. We knew the south wind might kill the fluke bite, but we were going to give our best effort.

Headed out to s.g. reef where our first couple of drifts produced shorts and 2 keepers. With the big heave we decided to head North. Got up to elberon and long branch with much better conditions. We started to get some action but it was heavy on the shorts, but we did get a keeper here and there.

Went up to the rocks looking for some bigger fish , made three drifts and caught all shorts. Unusual for the rocks but the problem was water temp.

loads of blues made there appearance on the finder and created a little havoc on our bucktails.

Then came the wind all 25knts. headed to l.b. in 30ft the only place we could fish with our 1.8 drift.Had some action but again it was heavy on the shorts. Miracle pete managed a few more keepers and won the dollar from Pete.

Guys worked hard for our 9 keepers despite Tough conditions for a few Seabass and a ling as well. alot of 17 1/2 heartbreakers

Great group of guys funny and a lot of laughing.

Bumpy ride home.

Nj StripersFrom Shark River, North to Sandy Hook, Anglers have finally been awarded with trophy size bass. But you have to be in the right place at the right time. Its back to basics and persistence if you want to land a few trophies this season. Anglers caught a big break this week nailing bass up to 40lbs. Surf reports came in with top water pencil poppers producing most of the action.

This year’s striper run had a late start but patience is paying off. Keith Bush from Monroe was just north of Shrewsbury Rocks when he hooked into his first 40lb trophy on a bunker head along with some big gator blues.

Captain Joe aboard the Irish Ayes has been working hard all week keeping customers happy with fluke and bass. Captain Joe worked his way north out of the inlet into some bunker pods that produced fish from 39 to 41 1/2 inches and limiting out on bass before big blues moved in for an early dinner. Irish Ayes also did well this week in the JCAA fluke tournament .Captain Joe had patrons. Bob Cole, Andy, Johnny Oz and Lenny who took 7th place with a 6.2lb flattie weighed in at the Shark River Port.
